The light driven transmembrane proton pump Bacteriorhodopsin is an excellent model system for a number of problems in biological physics: protein dynamics, structure-function relationship of proteins, conversion of light energy into the electrochemical energy of the proton concentration difference across the cell membrane. In addition, it has several exceptional properties that make it an important candidate for optoelectronic applications.
